Sandy Water Park, Llanelli

Carmarthenshire has 14 picnic sites located throughout the county, providing visitors and locals with facilities and a place to rest and enjoy some of our wildlife and countryside.

Each picnic site is situated in a scenic setting, often with stunning views of the surrounding area. They are located close to main roads and the transport network. Toilet facilities are availble at Carmarthen Museum (when open) and Newcastle Emlyn but not at the other sites. (Picnic Sites Map »)

Betws Mountain

Hillside picnic site on common land with commanding, panoramic views. Nearest bus Ammanford/Betws (3km). (Grid Ref SN 652103)
Flat tarmac area, level ground, mainly a viewing area over the western end of the Carmarthen Black Mountains.

Blaen Esgair, Newcastle Emlyn

On the B4333, 5km south east of Newcastle Emlyn. Elevated site with views across the Teifi Valley and to the Cambrian Mountains. Restricted bus service to Maudsland. (Grid Ref SN 329349)
Level area, only slight inclines.

Carmarthen Museum Grounds, Abergwili

2.5 hectares of attractive landscaped grounds of Carmarthen Museum adjacent to Bishop's Pond. Regular bus service from Carmarthen to Abergwili.
The grounds around the museum are almost level, very slight inclines, mostly tarmac paths with a short section through trees that is gravel base but still quite level. Toilets available during museum opening times.

Dylan's Walk, Laugharne

Overlooking the estuary close to the Boathouse. Regular bus service to Laugharne. (Grid Ref SN 305111)
Accessible on the north side (from holiday park) down an incline (wheelchair friendly) south side (Coastal side) has stepped access.

Dryslwyn

Attractive site at the foot of Dryslwyn Castle on the B4297 with interpretive panels of the history of the site and short walk to the castle. Seasonal toilets. Regular bus service operates close to Dryslwyn. (Grid Ref SN 552203)
Has tarmac paths with very slight inclines across the site.

Edwinsford, Talley

Adjacent to the B4337 2kms north of Talley on a section of old road. Short walk to viewpoint on the River Cothi. Restricted bus service to Talley. (Grid Ref SN 634346)
Surfaced and level paths suitable for wheel chair access.

Ffynnon Llawddog, Cenarth

Very attractive riverside location on the River Teifi just downstream of Cenarth Falls/Bridge. St. Llawddog's Well on site together with disabled fishing platform. Regular bus service from Carmarthen to Cardigan, (Grid Ref SN 266415)
Almost all of the site with slight inclines and with surfaced paths only one short section of path with incline to rivers edge that may not be suitable for some wheelchair users.

Grist, Laugharne

Close to Laugharne Castle seating, interpretative information and with adjacent car park. Regular bus service to Laugharne. (Grid Ref SN 302104)
Surfaced paths to information panel and along salt marsh edge and beneath castle, salt marsh path runs onto gravel surface which may be unsuitable for some although it is level ground, access to central part of village (square) also level from parking site.

Llanllwni Mountain

Hillside viewpoint on public access common land with extensive panoramic views of the Teifi Valley and adjoining countryside. Regular bus service to Llanllwni (2kms). (Grid Ref SN 507389)
Small level car park area with good views no additional paths on the site.

Newcastle Emlyn

(Castle Street). Amenity area overlooking River Teifi close to the Castle and adjacent car park. Adjacent Castle grounds with attractive riverside walk. Regular daily bus service to Newcastle Emlyn. (Grid Ref SN 312407)
The site is accessed by inclined surfaced path (suitable for most wheelchair users) to get to and from the level riverside surfaced paths. Level access to town from car park where there are public toilets.

Pontarffinnant, Llanarthne

Secluded site in a wooded area set above the River Tywi 1 km west of Llanarthne on the B4300. Seasonal toilets. Main bus route from Carmarthen to Llandeilo. (Grid Ref 507202)
Most of site has level surfaced paths with only a small part of the site accessible with steep inclined path.

Sugar Loaf

On the A483 at the County boundary 10km north of Llandovery. Short walk to the hiltop viewpoint offers panoramic views of the Tywi Valley/Brecon Beacons. Seasonal toilets. Rail link close to site. (Grid Ref SN 835437)
Surfaced paths and level to slightly inclined ground to and from car park to picnic benches.

Ynys Fach, Glandy Cross

Roadside viewpoint on the A478 overlooking the Preseli Hills with small enclosed picnic/seating area. Restricted bus service to Glandy Cross. (Grid Ref SN 157278)
Level site with surfaced path to and from the car parking area.

Pen-Y-Mynydd, Pembrey Mountain

Sited between Pembrey and Trimsaran. Panoramic viewpoint overlooking the Gwendraeth Valley and Carmarthen Bay. Good starting point for using footpaths on Pembrey Mountain including Bwlch Newydd and Waun Baglan woodlands. Nearest bus Trimsaran (2km). (Grid Ref SN 454038)
Surfaced paths to and from car parking area with slight inclines around the site area.
