Game, still water & coarse
Some excellent still waters available for the trout fishermen. What better way to spend a day fishing one of these lakes in the picturesque surroundings of Carmarthenshire.
Most are stocked with Rainbows, others are stocked with Browns and Blues. Carmarthenshire can also lay claim to some of the longest established still waters in Wales, lakes purposely designed and built for the fly fisherman. One example is one of Wales's premier still waters "Garnffrwd Trout Fishery" a stunning 5 acre spring fed lake regarded as one of the best designed lakes for the fly fisherman in the uk.
Usk Reservoir and Garnffrwd
For those that wish to fish in calmer waters, two different man-made quality stillwaters offer contrasting angling experiences. The 280 acre Usk reservoir at an elevation of 1000 feet, surrounded by thick conifer forest but with plenty of open bankside, provides wilderness scene sport for both rainbow and brown trout on worm, spinner or lure style fly. At a lower level, Garnffrwd Fishery is a 5 acre spring fed lake set in woodland and styled as a classic weekly stocked flyfishing lake with instructions to return brownies, keep rainbows and not use leaders under 5lb. Plenty of sport for all!
Coarse Fishing
While the rivers of Carmarthenshire may be full of game fish, there are plenty of shady edged still waters and well maintained purpose built ponds that hold coarse fish from bream, carp and rudd to pike, perch and tench. The spotlight on salmon and sea trout means that coarse fishing is under exploited providing for plenty of opportunities within wonderfully rural settings. So whether after a 20lb carp on an all night session or an introduction to easily caught perch, there’s a chance for everyone here.
